A new manuscript by Massad and Banta describes the creation of novel synthetic transhydrogenases created through the fusion of unrelated oxidreductase enzymes. The fused enzymes are decorated with NAD-PEG swing arms to enable cofactor-free biocatalysis. This modular approach could be used to develop a wide range of novel transhydrogenase activities.
