A new manuscript by Inaba, Xu, Vardner, West and Banta describing a new mechanism for microbially influenced corrosion was published in Applied and Environmental Microbiology. Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans cells can be cultivated with pyrite such that thiosulfate is formed at low pH.  This leads to a highly corrosive environment that can degrade stainless steel.
