A new manuscript by Jung, Inaba, Jiang, West and Banta describes the engineering of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans for the expression of poly-histidine tagged proteins. This leads to the pH-dependent binding of divalent cations, such as copper and cobalt and presents a proof of concept where biomining bacteria could be engineered for simultaneous bioleaching and bioseparations. The new results were published in ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces.
